What you'll learn

  • Apply the laws of exponents — including zero, negative and integer exponents — and write very large and very small numbers in scientific notation
  • Factorise algebraic expressions using common factors, grouping, the difference of two squares and trinomial methods, and check each factorisation by expansion
  • Solve linear equations and simple simultaneous equations, and draw and interpret straight-line graphs using gradient and intercepts
  • Reason about triangles using congruence and similarity, and calculate the surface area and volume of prisms and cylinders
  • Interpret scatter plots, recognise misleading graphs, and calculate probabilities of two-stage events using tree diagrams

Before you start

  • Grade 8 algebra: collecting like terms and expanding brackets
  • Working with integers, including negative numbers and the basic laws of exponents
  • Plotting points on the Cartesian plane and using the Theorem of Pythagoras
