The same true numbers can be drawn honestly or deceptively. A misleading graph uses a correct dataset but presents it to push you toward a wrong conclusion. The common tricks:

  • Truncated axis: the vertical axis starts above zero, so tiny differences look enormous.
  • Unequal or missing scales: gaps between values aren't consistent, distorting the picture.
  • 3D / area tricks: making a bar twice as tall and twice as wide so it looks four times bigger.
  • Missing labels: no axis titles or units, so you can't tell what's really being compared.

A careful reader always checks: Where does the axis start? Are the scales even? Is anything unlabelled?
