Natural Sciences — Grade 9
A complete, CAPS-aligned Grade 9 Natural Sciences course: the cells every living thing is built from, the compounds and reactions that rearrange the world's atoms, the forces and circuits behind the electricity bill, and the rock beneath South Africa that we mine for a living. Every idea comes in two modes — a precise Theory explanation and an intuition-first Visual picture — with South African examples and practice problems that carry hints and full worked solutions.

What you'll learn
- Use a light microscope correctly, calculate total magnification, and identify the parts of plant and animal cells together with the job each part does
- Explain how cells are organised into tissues, organs, organ systems and organisms, and account for the shape of a specialised cell in terms of its function
- Read the periodic table, interpret and write chemical formulae, and count the atoms in a compound
- Write word equations for the reactions of metals and non-metals with oxygen, metals with acids and acids with bases, and balance simple chemical equations using the conservation of atoms
- Distinguish mass from weight, calculate weight from mass, and predict what happens when resistors or cells are added to series and parallel circuits
- Calculate household electricity use in kilowatt-hours and its cost in rand, and justify practical ways of reducing it
- Describe the structure of the lithosphere, classify rocks, outline how ore becomes metal, and weigh the benefits of mining in South Africa against its environmental and human costs
Before you start
- Explain photosynthesis and respiration in simple terms and use the particle model of matter (Grade 8)
- Build and describe a simple series circuit and explain static electricity (Grade 8)
- Work confidently with whole numbers, decimals, percentages and simple formulae, and read tables and graphs
