Worked example — why is a root hair cell long and thin?
A plant absorbs water through the surface of its root cells. A rounded cell offers only its small outer face to the soil. Push a long, narrow hair out of that same cell, and the surface touching the soil water increases enormously while the volume of the cell hardly changes.
More surface, same amount of cell, means more absorption per cell. Multiply that by the thousands of root hairs on a single maize root and you can see how a plant in a Free State field pulls up enough water to survive a dry week.
The same logic explains the red blood cell: squashing the disc inwards on both sides increases its surface for absorbing oxygen and lets it fold through capillaries narrower than itself.
