Natural Sciences — Grade 5

A hands-on, CAPS-aligned Grade 5 Natural Sciences course covering life cycles, the three states of matter, everyday forces, and the Earth's surface and weather. Every idea comes in two modes — a precise Theory explanation and an intuition-first Visual picture — with examples from South African life and plenty of practice with hints and full solutions.

What you'll learn

  • Describe the life cycles of familiar plants and animals, and explain how complete and incomplete metamorphosis differ
  • Identify the three states of matter by their properties and explain how heating and cooling move matter between states through melting, freezing, evaporation and condensation
  • Recognise everyday forces — pushes and pulls, gravity, friction and magnetism — and describe how they change the movement or shape of objects
  • Describe the Earth's surface of rock, soil, water and landforms, explain how we observe and measure weather, and say why weather and seasons matter to life in South Africa

Before you start

  • Sort objects into living and non-living things and name the basic needs of living things (Grade 4)
  • Recognise everyday materials and describe simple pushes, pulls and movement (Grade 4)
  • Read short instructions and add and subtract whole numbers
