Two more changes of state involve liquids and gases.

  • Evaporation is when a liquid turns into a gas. Wet washing on the line dries because the water slowly turns into an invisible gas (water vapour) and drifts into the air.
  • Condensation is when a gas turns back into a liquid as it cools. Tiny water drops form on the outside of a cold cooldrink bottle when water vapour in the air touches the cold glass.

Evaporation happens faster when it is hot, windy and sunny, and when the water is spread over a large surface. If you keep heating water it will eventually boil at 100 degrees Celsius (100 °C), turning into gas very fast.

Wet washing on the line dries because the water changes from a liquid into a gas. This change is called...

The tiny water drops that form on the outside of a cold cooldrink bottle are caused by ______ (water vapour turning back into a liquid).

At what temperature, in degrees Celsius (°C), does water boil?

Which conditions would make a puddle of water evaporate the fastest?
