A magnet can pull certain materials towards it without touching them — this is the magnetic force.

  • Magnetic materials (a magnet attracts them): iron, steel and nickel. A steel paperclip or a tin can will stick to a magnet.
  • Non-magnetic materials (a magnet does not attract them): plastic, wood, paper, glass, and metals like copper and aluminium.

Every magnet has two ends called poles: a north pole (N) and a south pole (S). When you bring two magnets together:

  • Unlike poles (N and S) attract — they pull together.
  • Like poles (N and N, or S and S) repel — they push apart.
