Natural Sciences — Grade 6

A CAPS-aligned Grade 6 Natural Sciences course covering ecosystems and food chains, mixtures and how to separate them, simple electric circuits, and the solar system. Every idea is given twice — a careful Theory explanation and an intuition-first Visual picture — with examples from South African life and plenty of practice with hints and full solutions.

What you'll learn

  • Describe an ecosystem as living and non-living parts working together, and build food chains and food webs that show where the energy in every meal comes from
  • Explain what a mixture is and choose a sensible separation method — hand sorting, sieving, filtering, magnetism, evaporation or distillation — by matching the method to a difference in properties
  • Build and explain a simple electric circuit with cells, wires, a switch and a bulb, sort materials into conductors and insulators, and apply basic electrical safety
  • Name the Sun and the eight planets in order, explain that planets orbit the Sun while moons orbit planets, and describe how distance from the Sun changes the length of a planet's year

Before you start

  • Sort living from non-living things and describe what living things need to stay alive (Grade 4-5)
  • Recognise the three states of matter and describe melting, freezing, evaporation and condensation (Grade 5)
  • Add, subtract and compare whole numbers and simple decimals, and read a simple table
