Area is the amount of flat space a shape covers, measured in square units (cm2^2, m2^2). Think of covering the shape with 1×11 \times 1 tiles and counting them.

For a rectangle, the tiles form rows and columns, so

A=l×b.A = l \times b.

For a square, A=s×sA = s \times s.

Worked example. A rectangle 88 m by 55 m has area 8×5=408 \times 5 = 40 m2^2. A square of side 66 cm has area 6×6=366 \times 6 = 36 cm2^2.

A rectangle is 88 m long and 55 m wide. What is its area, in m2^2?

A square tile has sides of 66 cm. What is its area, in cm2^2?

A rectangular carpet is 44 m by 33 m. How many 11 m2^2 tiles are needed to cover it exactly?

A rectangle has an area of 2424 cm2^2 and a length of 66 cm. What is its width, in cm?
