The perimeter of a shape is the total distance around its edge — you find it by adding the lengths of all the sides.

For a rectangle with length ll and breadth bb, opposite sides are equal, so

P=l+b+l+b=2×(l+b).P = l + b + l + b = 2 \times (l + b).

For a square with side ss, all four sides are equal, so P=4×sP = 4 \times s.

Worked example. A rectangle is 88 m long and 55 m wide: P=2×(8+5)=2×13=26P = 2 \times (8 + 5) = 2 \times 13 = 26 m. A square of side 77 cm has P=4×7=28P = 4 \times 7 = 28 cm.

A rectangle is 88 m long and 55 m wide. What is its perimeter, in metres?

A square vegetable garden has sides of 77 m. What is its perimeter, in metres?

A rectangular soccer field is 9090 m long and 4545 m wide. How many metres of rope are needed to go around it exactly once?

A rectangle has a perimeter of 2020 cm and a length of 66 cm. What is its width?
