Volume is the amount of space a solid object takes up, measured in cubic units (cm3^3, m3^3). Imagine filling the object with 1×1×11 \times 1 \times 1 cubes and counting them.

For a rectangular prism (a box shape) with length ll, breadth bb and height hh,

V=l×b×h.V = l \times b \times h.

Capacity is how much liquid a container holds, measured in millilitres and litres. A handy link: 11 cm3^3 holds exactly 11 mL, and 11 litre =1000= 1000 mL.

Worked example. A box 44 cm by 33 cm by 22 cm has volume 4×3×2=244 \times 3 \times 2 = 24 cm3^3.

A box measures 44 cm by 33 cm by 22 cm. What is its volume, in cm3^3?

How many millilitres are there in 22 litres?

A rectangular water tank is 55 m long, 22 m wide and 33 m deep. What is its volume, in m3^3?

A carton holds 500500 mL of juice. How many full cartons are needed to fill a 33-litre jug?
