To subtract, stack the numbers with columns aligned and work from the right. If a column's top digit is too small, borrow ten from the column to its left.

Worked example. 16043581\,604 - 358:

Units: 484 - 8 won't go, so borrow. The tens digit is 00, so borrow from the hundreds first. After borrowing: units 148=614 - 8 = 6, tens 95=49 - 5 = 4, hundreds 53=25 - 3 = 2, thousands 11. Answer 12461\,246.

Work out 586243586 - 243.

Work out 732458732 - 458.

Work out 300012753\,000 - 1\,275.
