Adding Whole Numbers

To add larger whole numbers, stack them so the columns line up — units under units, tens under tens — and add each column from the right. When a column total reaches $10$ or more, carry the extra ten into the next column.

Worked example. $1\,236 + 458$ :

Units: $6+8=14$ — write $4$ , carry $1$ . Tens: $3+5+1=9$ . Hundreds: $2+4=6$ . Thousands: $1$ . Total $1\,694$ .
