A detail drawing is a complete manufacturing instruction for one part. Everything a workshop needs must be on it, and nothing may be inferred.
It must state: every dimension needed to make the part, from clearly identified datums; tolerances where they matter; material; surface finish where it matters; treatments; and the part number and name in the title block.
Choose views for the part, not by habit. A flat plate may need only one view plus a thickness note. A shaft needs one view plus diameters. Drawing three views of a simple part wastes space and adds opportunities for inconsistency.
Sections where interiors matter. A housing with internal bores is unreadable in hidden detail — section it.
Worked example. A shaft is best drawn as a single view along its axis with diameters dimensioned, plus a section or end view for a keyway. A front, top and side view of the same shaft gives two nearly identical circles and communicates less.
