Energy Makes Things Happen

Energy is what makes things happen. It makes things move, grow, heat up, light up and make sound. Nothing can move or change without energy.

The Sun is the main source of energy for our planet. It sends us light and heat across space. Plants use the Sun's energy to grow, and that energy is then stored in food. When you eat pap or fruit, you take in that stored energy so your body can move and grow.

Energy is also stored in fuels like wood, paraffin and petrol. Burning wood releases heat and light for cooking. Electricity carries energy into our homes for lights and stoves — which is exactly why, during load-shedding, the things that need electricity stop working.

Worked example. Trace the energy in a slice of bread. The Sun's energy grew the wheat; the wheat stored that energy as food; the bread carries it; and eating the bread lets you run and play. Follow the energy back far enough and you nearly always reach the Sun.
