An angle measures the amount of turn between two lines meeting at a point, in degrees (°°). Angles are classified by size:

TypeSize
Acutebetween 0° and 90°90°
Rightexactly 90°90°
Obtusebetween 90°90° and 180°180°
Straightexactly 180°180°
Reflexbetween 180°180° and 360°360°
Revolutionexactly 360°360°

Worked example. Classify 45°45°, 90°90°, 130°130°, 200°200°: acute, right, obtuse, reflex.

Exam checkpoint

Classify an angle by its size: acute is less than 9090^\circ, right is exactly 9090^\circ, obtuse is between 9090^\circ and 180180^\circ, straight is 180180^\circ and reflex is more than 180180^\circ. Use a protractor from its centre mark and read the scale that starts at zero on the correct side.

Short worked example. An angle of 125125^\circ is obtuse because it is greater than 9090^\circ but less than 180180^\circ.

What type of angle is 130°130°?

How many degrees are there in a right angle?

An angle of 250°250° is a ___ angle.

Three angles sit side by side on a straight line: 60°60°, xx, and 40°40°. Find xx (in degrees).
