To multiply a two- or three-digit number by a single digit, break the big number into its place-value parts, multiply each part, then add.

Worked example. 34×634 \times 6:

34×6=(30×6)+(4×6)=180+24=20434 \times 6 = (30 \times 6) + (4 \times 6) = 180 + 24 = 204

The same method stretches to three digits. 213×4=(200×4)+(10×4)+(3×4)=800+40+12=852213 \times 4 = (200 \times 4) + (10 \times 4) + (3 \times 4) = 800 + 40 + 12 = 852.

Work out 23×423 \times 4.
