When a whole is split into 1010 equal parts, each part is one tenth. We can write a tenth as a fraction, 110\frac{1}{10}, or as a decimal, 0.10.1.

The dot is the decimal point, and the first digit after it counts tenths:

310=0.3710=0.7\frac{3}{10} = 0.3 \qquad \frac{7}{10} = 0.7

Worked example. Write 410\frac{4}{10} as a decimal.

Four tenths goes in the first place after the decimal point: 410=0.4\frac{4}{10} = 0.4.
