Decimals: Tenths

When a whole is split into $10$ equal parts, each part is one tenth. We can write a tenth as a fraction, $\frac{1}{10}$ , or as a decimal, $0.1$ .

The dot is the decimal point, and the first digit after it counts tenths:

\frac{3}{10} = 0.3 \qquad \frac{7}{10} = 0.7

Worked example. Write $\frac{4}{10}$ as a decimal.

Four tenths goes in the first place after the decimal point: $\frac{4}{10} = 0.4$ .
