Interpenetration with Offset Axes

Grade 11 interpenetration had axes in line — the branch's axis met the main solid's axis. Grade 12 removes that: the axes are offset, passing each other without intersecting.

What the offset destroys is symmetry. With axes in line the curve is symmetrical about the centre line. Offset it, and the curve becomes fully asymmetric — deeper on the near side, shallower on the far side — and nothing may be mirrored.

The method still works, with one addition. Generators are still numbered, projected and crossed with the other surface. But the offset must be carried through every view: a generator's position in the plan no longer implies its position in the elevation the way it did when the axes met. Every point must be projected properly rather than inferred by symmetry.

Worked example. A branch offset by 15 mm from a header's centre line: on one side the branch cuts deeply into the header, on the other it barely grazes it. Twelve generators produce twelve genuinely different heights, none of them repeating.
