Complex Two-Point Perspective

Grade 12 perspective adds features that do not sit on the leading edge: overhangs, recesses, circles and multiple stepped masses.

Every height comes from the leading edge. To place a feature partway back, project its height forward to the leading edge (where heights are true), measure it there, then project it back along the lines to the vanishing point. Measuring anywhere else foreshortens the height by an unknown amount.

Dividing a receding surface. Equal real divisions are not equal in perspective — they compress with distance. To divide a receding wall equally, use the diagonal method: the diagonals of a perspective rectangle cross at its perspective centre, which is not its visual midpoint. Repeating this subdivides correctly.

Circles in perspective become ellipses whose major axis is not aligned with the receding surface's edges. Construct the enclosing perspective square first, then inscribe the ellipse touching its side midpoints — found by the diagonal method, not by eye.

Worked example. A row of five equally spaced windows along a receding wall: measured equally they march away wrongly and the far end looks too long. The diagonal method compresses them correctly.
