A sectional elevation cuts through many materials in a short distance. Conventional hatching lets each be identified without a label on every layer.
Standard conventions: brickwork as diagonal hatching; concrete as a stippled or aggregate pattern; earth as a broken irregular pattern; timber showing grain, with end grain marked differently from side grain; insulation as a soft looped pattern.
Line weight carries structure. The cut outline of walls and slabs is drawn thick; everything not cut — fixtures, the far side of the room, dimension and projection lines — is drawn thin. This is why a floor plan reads instantly: the eye follows the thick lines and sees the structure.
Worked example. A plan drawn entirely in one line weight is technically complete but very hard to read: the walls do not stand out from the furniture, and the structure has to be worked out rather than seen. Line weight is a reading aid, not decoration.
