A development is the flat pattern that, when cut out and folded or rolled, becomes the three-dimensional object. It is how sheet metal work is actually produced: mark out flat, cut, roll, weld.
The governing rule: every line on a development must be a TRUE LENGTH. A development is a flat unfolding of the real surface, so every edge on it must be the edge's real size. A foreshortened length taken from a view produces a pattern that does not close when rolled.
Which surfaces can be developed. Prisms, cylinders, pyramids and cones can be developed exactly — they are developable, meaning they can be unrolled onto a plane without stretching. A sphere cannot, which is why a globe is made from printed gores rather than one flat sheet.
Seams and allowances. A real development also needs a seam position (put it on the shortest edge to minimise welding) and, for folded work, a bending allowance.
Worked example. A pyramid's development uses the true length of its sloping edge, found by rotation — never the sloping outline of the elevation, which is foreshortened. Using the elevation length gives triangles too short, and the assembled pyramid has gaps at every corner.
