Solid geometry and descriptive geometry work in first angle, while the mechanical drawing you have just done is third angle. Same object, same views — different arrangement. Switching convention mid-year is deliberate: CAPS wants you to state the convention rather than absorb one layout as "normal".
In first angle the plan (top view) sits below the elevation (front view), and the end view appears on the side opposite the direction you looked from.
The two principal planes are the horizontal plane (HP) and the vertical plane (VP). A solid is described by how its axis sits relative to them: perpendicular to the HP, parallel to the HP, or inclined to one of them. That description determines everything about how the views come out.
Worked example. A hexagonal prism with its axis perpendicular to the HP shows the true hexagon in the plan and a plain rectangle in the elevation. Tilt the axis and neither view shows the hexagon truly — the plan becomes a compressed hexagon.
