Like terms have exactly the same variable part. 3x3x and 5x5x are like terms; 3x3x and 3y3y are not, and neither are 4x4x and 4x24x^2. You can only add or subtract like terms — just add their number parts (the coefficients) and keep the variable:

3x+5x=8x7a2a=5a3x + 5x = 8x \qquad 7a - 2a = 5a

To simplify a longer expression, gather each family of like terms:

4x+3+2x+5=(4x+2x)+(3+5)=6x+84x + 3 + 2x + 5 = (4x + 2x) + (3 + 5) = 6x + 8

The 6x6x and the 88 are unlike, so 6x+86x + 8 is as far as it simplifies.

Worked example. Simplify 9y4y+2y9y - 4y + 2y.

All like terms: 94+2=79 - 4 + 2 = 7, so the answer is 7y7y.

Which pair are like terms?

Simplify 7x+3x7x + 3x.

Simplify 8y3y+y8y - 3y + y.

Simplify 6a+24a+56a + 2 - 4a + 5.
