Decimals are just fractions with denominators 10,100,100010, 100, 1000. The columns after the point are tenths, hundredths, thousandths.

Adding and subtracting: line up the decimal points so that tenths sit under tenths.

3.45+2.70=6.158.603.75=4.853.45 + 2.70 = 6.15 \qquad 8.60 - 3.75 = 4.85

(Writing 2.72.7 as 2.702.70 and 8.68.6 as 8.608.60 keeps the columns tidy.)

Multiplying by a whole number works like ordinary multiplication, keeping the point in line: 12.50×4=50.0012.50 \times 4 = 50.00. Multiplying by 1010 shifts every digit one place left: 3.6×10=363.6 \times 10 = 36.

Calculate 3.45+2.73.45 + 2.7.
