Decimals to Hundredths

A decimal extends place value past the units, separated by a decimal point. The first place after the point is tenths, the second is hundredths:

units.tenthshundredths
3.45

So 3.453.45 means 33 ones + 4+\ 4 tenths + 5+\ 5 hundredths. Just like whole numbers, each place is ten times the one on its right — a hundredth is ten times smaller than a tenth.

Worked example. Which is larger, 0.60.6 or 0.450.45? Write 0.60.6 as 0.600.60. Compare tenths: 6>46 > 4, so 0.60.6 is larger. A common slip is to think 0.450.45 is bigger 'because it has more digits' — but more digits does not mean a bigger number.

In the number 4.374.37, what is the place value of the digit 77?

Which is larger, 0.60.6 or 0.450.45? Write down the larger value.

Write four and nine hundredths as a decimal.
