Decimals to Hundredths

A decimal extends place value past the units, separated by a decimal point. The first place after the point is tenths, the second is hundredths:

So $3.45$ means $3$ ones $+\ 4$ tenths $+\ 5$ hundredths. Just like whole numbers, each place is ten times the one on its right — a hundredth is ten times smaller than a tenth.

Worked example. Which is larger, $0.6$ or $0.45$? Write $0.6$ as $0.60$. Compare tenths: $6 > 4$, so $0.6$ is larger. A common slip is to think $0.45$ is bigger 'because it has more digits' — but more digits does not mean a bigger number.
