Pollutants enter water through sewage, industry, agriculture, mining, litter and runoff. Some nutrients cause eutrophication: algal growth increases, decomposition uses dissolved oxygen and aquatic animals may suffocate. The route, dose, duration and organism determine risk; not every pollutant behaves in the same way.
