Reading biological diagrams, tables and graphs

Scientific representations compress evidence. A diagram may show relationships but not scale; a table can show exact values; a graph can show patterns. Read titles, axes, units, keys and sample sizes before explaining. Distinguish a direct observation from an inference. For example, a line graph may show dissolved oxygen falling after a nutrient input; the inference that decomposition is responsible needs supporting biological knowledge.
