Ecologists often estimate populations because counting every organism is impossible. Random quadrats help avoid choosing only convenient locations; transects show change along a gradient such as distance from a river. Reliable evidence includes enough samples, a consistent method, clear units and honest limits. An estimate should report what was sampled, where, when and how variation was handled.
Work it through
To compare grass cover in shaded and sunny areas, place randomly located quadrats in each habitat, estimate percentage cover using the same rule, calculate a mean and show the spread. One beautiful photograph is not enough evidence for a general claim.
