Cellular respiration and ATP

Cellular respiration transfers chemical energy from glucose into ATP, a molecule cells can use for movement, active transport and synthesis. Aerobic respiration uses oxygen and produces carbon dioxide and water. Respiration occurs continuously in living cells, including plant cells. It is not the same as breathing: breathing moves gases at the organism level, while respiration releases usable energy in cells.
