A tissue is a group of similar cells that work together to do a particular job. Cells organise into tissues, tissues into organs, and organs into systems.

Plant tissues include:

  • Epidermis - a protective outer layer.
  • Parenchyma - packing and food-storage cells; carries out photosynthesis in leaves.
  • Collenchyma and sclerenchyma - provide flexible and rigid support.
  • Xylem - transports water and mineral salts upward.
  • Phloem - transports dissolved food (sugars).

Animal tissues fall into four main groups:

  • Epithelial tissue - covers and lines surfaces (e.g. skin, gut lining).
  • Connective tissue - joins and supports (e.g. bone, cartilage, blood).
  • Muscle tissue - contracts to produce movement.
  • Nervous tissue - carries electrical messages.

Which type of animal tissue covers and lines body surfaces, such as the skin and the lining of the gut?

Name the plant tissue that transports water and mineral salts upward from the roots to the leaves.

Animal tissues are grouped into these main types: epithelial, connective, muscle and nervous. How many main types of animal tissue is this?
