An acid-base reaction can be described at different levels. The formula equation HCl(aq) + NaOH(aq) → NaCl(aq) + H₂O(l) shows substances. A complete ionic equation separates strong aqueous electrolytes into ions. The net ionic equation removes spectator ions and focuses on the chemical change: H⁺(aq) + OH⁻(aq) → H₂O(l). Evidence can include an indicator colour change, pH change, conductivity changes or temperature change, but each observation needs interpretation. A salt is not always neutral in every context, so avoid using the word 'neutral' as an automatic label for every salt solution.

When equal reacting amounts of strong acid and strong base are mixed, H⁺ and OH⁻ combine to make water. Na⁺ and Cl⁻ remain dissolved and are spectators in the net ionic representation. In an exam response, balance atoms and charge, then explain which ions actually changed.
